What is
WebNMS SNMP Agent for Linux?
WebNMS SNMP Agent For
Linux is a product that facilitates monitoring
of linux nodes in a network. It gives very useful
information about the linux nodes based on two
standard mibs HOST-RESOURCES-MIB and RFC1213-MIB
and WebNMS specific mib ADVENTNET-LINUX-MIB.
It supports two protocols SNMP and HTTP. The
agent can be queried by snmp get, get next, get
bulk and walk operations from a Mib Browser or
from any SNMP Manager like Manageengine OpManager,
WebNMS FrameWork, IBM Tivoli and HP OpenView.
It can also be queried through a HTTP console
ie from a web browser.

What is
Linux Manager / Remote Installer Tool?
Linux Manager / Remote
Installer tool is for remote installation of the
agent. Linux Manager discovers all the linux
nodes present in the specified network domain.
After discovery of the linux nodes, we can
use the manager user interface to install the
LinuxAgent in the required machine by just
clicking the "Install Agent" link.
After installation of the LinuxAgent in
the target machine, we can access the agent from
the Manager UI by clicking on the machine name.

useful?
The Linux Operating System
is fast becoming the popular open source operating
systems in the world. With large number of active
installations, Linux operating system has become
the core of many high volume, business-critical
applications. Hence it becomes imperative to keep
the systems highly available for any modern organization,
because minutes of downtime could result in loss
of productivity and revenue. WebNMS SNMP Agent
for Linux plays its role by keeping the
users informed about the status of the Linux System
in the network.

Should Linux
Agent be run from user account or root account?
The LinuxAgent can be started
from both user and the root account . The Log
details present in ADVENTNET-LINUX-MIB such as
BootLog, Cron Log and Secure log details
and the Software Run Path in hrSwrunTable from
Host-Resources-Mib will be available only if the
LinuxAgent is started from the root account.
Other than these all the other information are
available to manager software even if the agent
is not started from root acccount.

What will
I miss if I run Linux Agent from user account
(say guest) instead of root account?
If the LinuxAgent is executed
from the normal user account the following details
will not be available.
- BootLog Table in ADVENTNET-LINUX-MIB
- CronLog Table in ADVENTNET-LINUX-MIB
- SecureLog Table in ADVENTNET-LINUX-MIB
- SoftwareRunPath parameter
in SWRun Table present in HOST-RESOURCES-MIB.

Why is that
while installing the Manager / installer software,
a script has to be run from root account?
What are the implications?
While installing the Manager
Installation_step1.sh script must be run from
the root account. This is because this script
creates a soft link under /usr/lib directory.
To create a soft link in /usr/lib directory the
user must be a root user. This is required
for the discovery process to work.

Is the remote agent installation
part secure?
Yes, the remote installation
part is secure. During remote installation
it asks for the username and password.

I run your agent when an agent is already running?
Yes, the LinuxAgent can
be run when another agent is already running
in the machine. Make sure they run in
different ports. If the port numbers clash,
LinuxAgent ports can be changed as given below;
Starting the Agent in a different Port
To start the linuxagent in a different port,
execute
sh StartAgent.sh <snmp port number>
<snmp trap port number> <http port
number>
Eg :: sh StartAgent.sh 9001 9002 9040
